About Jennie.

Picture
I have lived in Anacortes for 13 years. I met my husband, Jeff, here 11 years ago. Jeff grew up in Anacortes and is a graduate of Anacortes High School. He works for the City of Anacortes.

Jeff and I have three children. Macy is a freshman at Anacortes High School, Parker is a 7th grader at Anacortes Middle School, and Austin is a 1st grader at Mt. Erie Elementary. We stay busy supporting the kids in their various activities and volunteering through the Anacortes Baseball Club and Anacortes Little League, the Anacortes Lacrosse Club, Anacortes Parks and Recreation soccer, track, and basketball, and various dance classes at Fidalgo DanceWorks. We are members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Conner.

Our family loves living in this community where we have great friends and are also blessed to live close to many extended family members who call Anacortes home!

Education and Professional Experience.

I have worked in education for 23 years. I hold a bachelor's degree in K-8 Education from Washington State University (Go Cougs!), with an endorsement in Special Education. I have a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley University. I also hold a Certificate of Teacher Leadership from the University of  Washington. I am a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) in Early Adolescent Mathematics.

Currently, I am a Mathematics Specialist on the Professional Learning team at Student Achievement Partners, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving student achievement with a particular focus on accelerating academic progress for students who face barriers of racism or poverty. Prior to joining this organization, I coordinated, supported, and facilitated state-wide professional learning around the new Washington State Learning Standards for the Washington Education Association. Before that, I spent 19 years as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, and leader of professional learning in school districts in Washington State. I was a classroom teacher for 14 years, 7 in Anacortes, and a teacher leader for 5 years, 2 in Anacortes. I served for 4 years as the president of the Anacortes Education Association and served as a Board Director for the Washington Education Association. During this time, I worked with legislators and lobbied in Olympia and Washington D.C. in support of public education and educators.

Over my career, I have contributed to the work of several educational organizations including Illustrative Mathematics and the Teaching Channel. I have presented at National Conferences such as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM). I helped to write the Washington State K-12 Social Studies Learning Standards Version 1, published in 2008. I was selected as the Washington State Social Studies Teacher of the Year by the Washington State Council for the Social Studies in 2008.

I have devoted my entire 23-year career as an educator to supporting teachers and improving outcomes for all students. In my current job I get to impact a large number of students because I work with teachers, schools, districts, and states across the country. I am interested in joining the ASD School Board so I can contribute to the schools, students, and families in the community where I live.
